American Tourister Hi-Taper 1940s gray hard suitcase luggage 24 x 16 pink lining
This vintage American Tourister suitcase was first made in 1945, as you can see from the company ad shown in picture #2, which I found on the American Tourister history webpage. It’s called the “Hi-Taper” because it’s narrower at the top than the bottom. My family has owned in since at least the 1970s (and my grandparents likely bought it new in the 1940s). Measurements:24″ wide16.5″ tall, plus another 1″ for the handle6.5″ deep at the top; 7.5″ deep across the bottom (that’s the “taper” in “Hi-Taper”: this shape was intended to give the suitcase extra stability.6.5″ handle (length) x 1″ wide6.2 pounds, when empty–it’s very lightweight!Features:The lining has ribbons to tie around the clothes inside.There’s one large pocket inside the lid of the suitcase.There are two smaller pockets across the bottom and one side of the suitcase.Two tabs open and lock the suitcase (but I don’t have the keys, so you can’t lock it).Three hinges and four “feet” are made of metal on the bottom of the suitcase.There’s also an off-white cowhide label for you to fill in your name and address, in case your luggage is lost.email me any questions. The American Tourister Vintage 1940s Gray Hard Suitcase Luggage is a true vintage piece with a red lining, giving it a unique and retro aesthetic. I suspect the original lining was much brighter, but it has faded, but it is an excellent condition. This is a wonderful piece of vintage history. It is so well-made.
